You studied history. Help me tell HERstory. Throughout history women struggled to have a voice and in 1920 we got it, the right to vote. Let’s celebrate the amazing things that women have accomplished since then. We all have women that we admire who are courageous, intelligent and ground-breakers. Who inspires you?
I am so excited to announce my Call for Entries tentatively entitled “HERstory”, honoring the amazing accomplishments of women in this past century. This collection will be published in a book by Schiffer Publishing in 2019. I would like to invite you to submit a 24”W x 30”L quilt about a woman who has done something amazing since 1920.
Following this introductory letter are the rules of the challenge and the registration form.
I hope you will come out to play with us.
HERstory: Guidelines and Rules and Registration
The 24”W x 30”L quilts (portrait orientation) are to be visual celebrations of strong women and the things that they have accomplished since we got the right to vote in the US, in 1920. All works must be original designs. Do not use patterns or other copyrighted materials. Text may be used, but no copyrighted verbiage. Any photos used must be original or in the public domain.
The quilts will be traveling and will be stacked, so they must be constructed flat. Embellishments, which could damage other quilts or be damaged by stacking, are not allowed. Textile friendly embellishments are allowed. Make sure your embellishments are not fragile. Please do not ask for special handling, individual care and/or special packing. This is not a 3-D project. Since quilts will be stacked together to be shipped, pieces must be clean and free of smoke odor. Any quilt with a strong odor will be shipped back to the creator at their cost.
Quilts will be juried by Lisa Ellis and Cyndi Souder. Professional quality photographs of your art quilt and a 250 word artist statement are required for jurying. Submission of your quilts will be done via ArtCall. Save your digital images as a high quality JPEG, no TIFF or RAW. The finished image should be a minimum of 3000 pixels on the longest side. DO NOT send me your actual quilt with your initial submission. The artist statement, explaining the story behind your piece, and photographs of the quilt are due to me by November 15, 2016. You will be sent a link to use to submit your quilt. You will be notified of the results of the jurying on or before January 15, 2017. Shipping information will be provided at the time of your acceptance.
Two hard copy, signed release forms must be included with delivery of quilt, one for Schiffer Publishing Ltd., the other to permit travel with exhibit(s). These forms will be emailed to you.
In addition to the non-refundable $40 registration fee, artists will be responsible for delivery of the quilt to and from Susanne Jones. If the quilt needs to be shipped, the artist will pay shipping and insurance to and from Susanne. The registration fee will be used to cover shipping to and from the exhibit venues, no additional fees will be required.
Each quilt must have a 4” wide x 23” long pleated sleeve http://www.quilts.com/sleeeves.pdf sewn 1” from the top edge of the quilt (1” down instead of the ½” in the directions because these won’t always be on pipe and drape) and a label. The label should contain the title of the work, artist’s name, date completed and town where made.
Quilts will travel for up to two years. Please do not publish pictures of your quilt or portions thereof via social media or otherwise until given the go ahead by the curator to do so. Please note that you may choose to only submit your quilt for the manuscript and decline the exhibit opportunities. Artists may submit more than one quilt.
Please email the attached form and a PayPal payment at https://www.paypal.com/webapps/mpp/send-money-online to email@example.com. Do not use my other email addresses for PayPal. Please register by May 18, 2016. If this date has already passed, email firstname.lastname@example.org to check on current status of this project.
HERstory Wish List: Please indicate your top 3 choices in order of preference. All quilts will be 24”W x 30”L. Please tell me the name of the woman you would like to depict. The purpose of this is to make sure the woman you choose fits the parameters of the collection. Only women whose accomplishment has happened since 1920 will be considered, with one exception. The exception will be made for people who want to depict the women who worked so hard to get the vote, the suffragettes. More than one entry will be allowed per historic woman, but limits may be placed on the number of entries per historic woman at my discretion.
Please tell me the name of the woman, and the accomplishment that she has had since 1920, that you would like to depict in your quilt. For example: Shirley Temple Black: US Chief of Protocol during the Ford Administration.
I will not begin work on a quilt until I receive email confirmation of my “assignment”. I understand I am responsible for insuring my own quilt.
