Last weekend was my first SAQA show, Southern Accents, at the Ruth Funk Center for Textile Arts at Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne. It was also my first gallery show. I was thrilled. The show was beautiful in every way. If you get the chance to see the show before August 22, please do. My SAQA friends have made some amazing pieces representing the south.
My piece, My Summer Paradise, takes me back to summers spent on the Magnolia River in Alabama with my grandparents. It was a utopia to me. We fished and boated. I spent time in the outdoor kitchen eating watermelon and I spent hours on my grandparents’ front porch in the hammock.
The caliber of the art in the Southern Accents is so incredibly high that you can hear the southern twang and taste the sweet tea. I was in awe of Jayne Gaskin’s cotton bolls and charmed by the southern town by Joann Camp which so resembled Clanton, AL where my relatives lived.
I was blessed to have my dear husband, Todd with me as well as my MIL, Marna and her friend, Sonie. Imagine my surprise when our friends, Jean, Robin, and Katie and their friend, BJ, also showed up. It was a day I will never forget.
